Rusty Whyte Magic Mushrooms: Origins and Genetics
Rusty Whyte, also known as Rusty White, is a Psilocybe cubensis strain created by PastyWhyte, a long-time Shroomery user and amateur mycologist from Canada. The project started in 2014 when Pastywhyte combined Albino A+ (AA+) and Colombian Rust (CRS) spores on an agar plate. Over time, he stabilized the genetics through multiple grows and spore prints, which resulted in the Rusty Whyte strain we know today.
After stabilizing the strain, Pastywhyte shared spore prints with other Shroomery members, allowing them to try the new strain themselves. Eventually, those grows produced more spore prints, which were further distributed within the community, leading to the strain’s widespread availability and popularity.
Rusty Whyte magic mushrooms are leucistic, which means they usually appear ghostly white to light yellow, depending on the amount of light they are exposed to. In addition, they produce rust-colored spores, a trait from the Colombian Rust genetics.
Acid Shroomz Rusty Whyte Liquid Culture Development
We started the development of our Rusty Whyte liquid culture with a high-quality, Europe-sourced spore print, from which we scraped spores onto several agar plates. Once the spores germinated, we selected healthy sections of mycelium and transferred them to a grain substrate to test their fruiting performance.
From the resulting mushrooms, we cloned a promising specimen and further refined it through multiple rounds of subculturing, ultimately achieving a robust monoculture. The final monoculture underwent thorough performance testing, and once we were satisfied with the results, we used it as the foundation for our liquid culture production.
The resulting Rusty Whyte strain is aggressive, fast-growing, and highly resistant to contamination, making it suitable for growers of all skill levels. It produces leucistic, low-pigmented mushrooms with rust-colored gills and spores, typically yielding multiple flushes and offering average potency—ideal for consistent and reliable cultivation.

Safety Precautions and Handling
When handling the Rusty Whyte liquid culture syringe, it is crucial to follow proper safety precautions to avoid contamination and ensure a successful growth process. Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind:
- Always handle the syringe in a clean and sterile environment.
- Wear powder-free nitrile gloves and a face mask to prevent contamination.
- Make sure there is little to no airflow in your workplace.
- Avoid touching the needle or the liquid culture directly to maintain sterility.
- Store the syringe in a refrigerator at 4-7°C to prolong its shelf life.
Optional Accessories
Consider using a flow hood or still air box (SAB) for added sterility during the inoculation of substrates.
