Psilocybe azurescens Magic Mushrooms: Origins and Genetics

Psilocybe azurescens is a very potent psychedelic mushroom from the Pacific Northwest region of North America, particularly the coastal areas of Oregon. It is commonly found growing in sandy soils and decaying wood.

Mycologists Paul Stamets and Jochen Gartz first described this mushroom in the late 20th century. It is notable for its shiny caramel-colored cap when moist, which fades to light brown or gray when dry. In addition, Psilocybe azurescens mushrooms often bruise blue to black when handled or damaged, a characteristic of many psilocybin-containing mushrooms. The spores are dark purple to brown.

Genetic adaptation has made Psilocybe azurescens grow well in temperate regions. When grown in northwestern Europe, the mycelium bears fruit from about November to January. Its psychoactive potency, attributed to high levels of psilocybin and psilocin, sets it apart from other psilocybin mushrooms.

Acid Shroomz Azurescens Liquid Culture Development

We initiated the isolation process using a spore print of Psilocybe azurescens sourced from Europe and transferred the spores onto agar plates. After the spores germinated, we continued the process with a few agar transfers of healthy mycelium, eventually resulting in a pure, isolated culture.

The resulting culture was used in early spring to make mushroom spawn, which we later used to create an outdoor patch. Six months later, when the outdoor patch proved viable, we started producing our Azurescens liquid cultures.

Our Azurescens culture is highly vigorous and produces potent mushrooms with caramel-colored caps. While this strain thrives in colder climates, it is best suited for experienced growers, as an outdoor patch can take one to two years to bear fruit. However, if you take proper care of your patch, you can enjoy this strain for many years to come.
